Be Who God Created You to Be

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” — Psalm 139:14

Learning to be who God created you to be isn’t always easy.

There are days when we wonder if we are doing enough.

Maybe you look around and see someone who seems to have the home you want, the career you wish you had, the family that seems to have everything together, or simply a life that looks a little more put together than yours.

I’ve found that comparison can be so sneaky. Sometimes we don’t even realize we’re doing it until we’re suddenly questioning our own lives.

But God never asked us to become someone else.

He created you to be you.

And there is something incredibly comforting about remembering that.

You don’t have to be a better version of someone else. You don’t have to become the person you think everyone expects you to be. And you don’t have to wait until you’ve accomplished more, changed something about yourself, or figured everything out before you can appreciate the woman God created you to be.

Remember that God Created You With a Purpose

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Those words can be easy to read quickly and move on from, but think about what they actually mean.

God created you intentionally.

Your personality, your gifts, your experiences, your passions, and even some of the things that make you different from the people around you are part of your story.

You don’t have to have everything figured out to have purpose.

Sometimes we think purpose has to be something big. We imagine a specific career, a major accomplishment, or something that everyone else can see.

But I think purpose can also be found in the ordinary parts of our lives.

It’s in the way you love your family.

It’s encouraging a friend when she needs it.

It’s creating a welcoming home.

It’s showing up for the people you love.

It’s being there when someone needs you.

It’s using the gifts God has given you, even when they don’t seem particularly impressive.

Your life doesn’t have to look impressive to be meaningful.

God has a purpose for your life, even in the seasons that feel ordinary.

Don’t Compare Your Life to Someone Else’s

Comparison has a way of making us feel like we’re falling behind.

Someone else seems to have the home you want.

Someone else has the career you wish you had.

Someone else’s family looks perfect.

Someone else seems to know exactly where they’re going.

But you’re only seeing a small piece of someone else’s story.

You don’t know what happens behind their closed doors. You don’t know what they’re carrying, what they’re struggling with, or what their journey has looked like to get there.

And more importantly, God didn’t ask you to live their life.

Your journey is allowed to look different.

When you stop comparing yourself to others, you have more room to notice what God is doing in your own life.

Instead of asking, “Why don’t I have what she has?” maybe we can begin asking:

“What has God placed in my life right now, and how can I be faithful with it?”

There is freedom in letting go of comparison.

You Don’t Have to Be Everything to Everyone

As women, it can be easy to feel like we’re supposed to do it all.

Be a good mom.

Be a good wife.

Keep a beautiful home.

Work hard.

Take care of everyone.

Look put together.

Stay healthy.

Be available.

And somewhere in the middle of trying to meet every expectation, we can forget to simply be ourselves.

But you don’t have to prove your worth by how much you accomplish.

You are valuable because God created you.

Your worth doesn’t increase when you check everything off your list, and it doesn’t disappear when you have a difficult day.

Give yourself some grace.

You are allowed to rest.

You are allowed to say no.

You are allowed to have unfinished things.

And you are allowed to be a work in progress.

Give Yourself Permission to Grow

Being who God created you to be doesn’t mean you never change.

We are always growing.

There will be seasons when God stretches us, teaches us, redirects us, and asks us to step outside of our comfort zone.

Growth can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t mean we’ve become someone different.

Sometimes becoming who we’re meant to be means letting go of things that no longer belong in our lives.

It means becoming more confident in who we are.

It means learning to say no.

It means setting boundaries.

It means trusting God when we don’t know what comes next.

And sometimes it simply means remembering that we don’t have to figure everything out today.

You can grow without criticizing who you are right now.

You can become more confident while still giving yourself grace.

And you can trust that God is working in your life even when you can’t see the entire picture yet.

Embrace the Person God Created

Maybe you’ve spent too much time wondering if you’re enough.

Maybe you’ve compared your life to someone else’s.

Maybe you’ve been waiting until you accomplish something before allowing yourself to feel proud of who you are.

If that’s you, I hope you’ll pause for a moment.

You don’t have to become someone else to have a beautiful life.

You can be who God created you to be.

You can embrace your strengths and acknowledge your weaknesses.

You can grow without criticizing who you are today.

You can learn from your past without letting it define you.

And you can trust that your life has purpose, even when you can’t see the entire picture yet.

A Little Encouragement for Today

If you need a reminder today, let it be this:

You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

You are loved.

You have purpose.

You don’t have to compare your journey to anyone else’s.

And you don’t have to become someone else to be enough.

Take a deep breath.

Give yourself some grace.

Thank God for the person He created you to be, and trust Him with the person you are still becoming.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
